Learn Something New! The Difference Between Radio Waves and Microwaves
1. What is wireless microwave? As the name suggests, microwave is actually a type of radio wave. It belongs to the radio waves with relatively short wavelengths. Radio waves can be classified into long waves, medium waves, and short waves. If the wavelength is shorter than that of short waves, it becomes a microwave.
2.Microwave communication is a type of radio communication. The wavelength of microwaves ranges from 10 meters to 1 millimeter. In the electromagnetic spectrum, various types of electromagnetic waves are arranged in order of increasing wavelength. The longest wavelength is radio waves, followed by infrared rays, then visible light, then ultraviolet rays, X-rays, and gamma rays. From this sequence, it can be seen that radio waves are a type of electromagnetic wave, but microwaves are not.
3. Different types of radio waves have different transmission methods and functions.
(1)For example, for long waves, they mainly use ground waves for transmission, enabling long-distance underwater communication (note: underwater); the maximum transmission distance can reach over 10,000 kilometers.
(2)Medium-wave and short-wave generally use skywave transmission (through the ionosphere reflection) and can be used to transmit broadcast signals; the transmission distances of medium-wave and short-wave are shorter than those of long-wave, usually ranging from several hundred to several thousand kilometers.
(3)Microwaves are generally transmitted over a line-of-sight (straight-line) path and can be used to transmit television signals. Television signals have a relatively short transmission distance, usually ranging from several tens of kilometers to a few hundred kilometers. Therefore, in the era without satellite television, the news broadcasts of CCTV needed to be relayed through microwave relay stations, station by station, to reach all parts of the country. Nowadays, on many mountains, you can see some television transmission towers, which is due to this reason. The wavelength of microwaves is very short. Microwaves with extremely short wavelengths can also be used for radar ranging and satellite communication, etc. The detection range of radar is related to the wavelength and output power. Even large ground-based radar stations with extremely high output power can detect targets as far as 4,000-5,000 kilometers away.
